A research year is sometimes taken by medical students to gain further research experiences and networking/mentorship opportunities before applying to residencies in their 4th year. This is often a full-time position for 1-2 years and taken between your 3rd and 4th year of medical school.

No, a research year is not required for all students interested in applying to PRS. However, there are some benefits to taking a research year – including strengthening your application before applying and further networking in the field. If your medical school does not have a home residency program in PRS, it may be beneficial to take a research year to explore what other programs have to offer.
